Food processing is among the better-supported sectors for small business funding in India. If capital is what’s holding up your machine purchase, three routes are worth knowing about before you write off the idea.

Meta title: Government Subsidy and Loan Options for a Chapati Making Machine (India) | Sunshine Industries
Meta description: Funding routes for buying commercial chapati and roti making machinery in India — PMFME, PMEGP, MUDRA and MSME schemes, what lenders ask for, and how to prepare your application.
A commercial chapati machine is a capital purchase, and for a small kitchen or a new production unit that’s often the whole obstacle. What many buyers don’t realise is that roti and chapati production sits squarely inside food processing — a sector the Government of India actively supports through credit-linked subsidy and collateral-free lending.
This page sets out the main routes, what lenders will ask you for, and how to put an application together. It doesn’t quote percentages or ceilings, because those change — check current official guidelines before building any number into your plan.
The three main routes
PMFME
Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises · Ministry of Food Processing Industries
The scheme designed specifically for micro food processing units, which is exactly what a chapati production unit is. It provides credit-linked subsidy support for setting up or upgrading a unit, along with training and handholding through state-level nodal agencies.
Best suited to
New or existing micro food processing enterprises buying production machinery
Applied through
State nodal agency and the scheme’s online portal, with a District Resource Person assigned to assist
Worth knowing
Because it’s food-processing specific, the application understands equipment like yours — you won’t have to justify why you need a chapati machine
PMEGP
Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme · KVIC / State KVIB / DIC
A margin-money subsidy scheme for setting up new micro enterprises in manufacturing and service. A chapati production unit qualifies as manufacturing. The subsidy is disbursed through the lending bank against the project cost.
Best suited to
New units, particularly where the project creates employment
Applied through
The PMEGP e-portal, routed via KVIC, State KVIB or your District Industries Centre
Worth knowing
Support rates differ for rural and urban locations and for certain applicant categories — check current norms for your case
MUDRA loans
Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana · Banks, NBFCs and MFIs
Not a subsidy but collateral-free lending for micro enterprises, in tiers according to loan size. For many buyers this is the simplest route, because it runs through your existing bank rather than a separate scheme process.
Best suited to
Existing businesses adding equipment, or smaller machine purchases
Applied through
Your bank, an NBFC or a microfinance institution
Worth knowing
Faster and simpler than subsidy schemes, but you repay the full amount — there’s no grant element
Check before you plan around any of these Subsidy rates, loan ceilings, turnover limits and eligibility criteria are revised periodically. Confirm current terms on the official scheme portal or with your District Industries Centre before committing to a plan. We’ve deliberately left numbers out of this page rather than publish figures that may be out of date.
Get Udyam registration first
Nearly all of this runs through MSME status. Udyam registration is free, online, and based on self-declaration — and it’s the gateway to scheme eligibility, priority sector lending and a range of other benefits. If you haven’t done it, do it before anything else.
Alongside it you’ll typically need an FSSAI licence, business registration, GST registration and a local trade licence. The full compliance picture is covered in our guide to starting a chapati making business in India.
What lenders and scheme officers actually want to see
Applications get held up for predictable reasons. The strongest ones answer these questions before they’re asked:
- A written equipment quote from the manufacturer, with model, specification and capacity stated
- A production plan — how many rotis per day, at what cost per roti, sold at what price
- Evidence of demand, ideally a contract or a letter of intent from an institutional buyer
- Premises details, whether owned or leased, with the lease in place
- Your licences — FSSAI, Udyam, GST, trade licence
- Your own contribution, since most schemes expect the promoter to fund a share
- A working capital estimate covering atta, fuel, wages and packaging, not just the machine
We’ll supply what you need for the application
A written quote with model, capacity and specification is something every lender asks for and we provide as a matter of course. If your application needs technical specifications, output ratings or a proforma invoice in a particular format, tell us and we’ll prepare it. It costs you nothing and it removes the most common reason applications stall.
Build the plan around real numbers
Whatever route you take, the plan has to hold up on its own. Two numbers do most of the work: your cost per roti, and your peak-hour production requirement. Get those right and the rest of the application follows.
Our chapati machine price guide explains what drives equipment cost and how to work out cost per roti, and the small business sizing guide covers peak-hour capacity. Both are worth reading before you fill in a project report.
A word on timing
Subsidy routes take longer than straight lending — application, appraisal, sanction and disbursement all take time, and equipment is usually purchased after sanction rather than before. Build that into your planning. If you have a contract starting on a fixed date, a MUDRA loan through your own bank may be the practical choice even though it carries no grant element.
Frequently asked questions
Is a chapati making machine eligible for government subsidy in India?
Chapati and roti production falls under food processing, which is covered by schemes including PMFME and PMEGP. Eligibility depends on your enterprise type, location and the specific scheme’s current criteria, so confirm with the official portal or your District Industries Centre.
Which scheme is best for buying a roti making machine?
PMFME is designed specifically for micro food processing units, which makes it the most natural fit. PMEGP suits new manufacturing units creating employment. MUDRA is the fastest route but is a loan rather than a subsidy. The right answer depends on whether you’re starting new or expanding, and how quickly you need the machine.
Do I need Udyam registration to apply?
For most MSME schemes, yes. Udyam registration is free, online and self-declared, and it’s the gateway to scheme eligibility and priority sector lending. Complete it before starting any application.
Will Sunshine Industries provide documents for my loan application?
Yes. We provide written quotes with model, capacity and technical specification, and can prepare a proforma invoice or specification sheet in whatever format your lender requires.
Can an existing restaurant get funding to add a chapati machine?
Existing businesses are generally eligible for equipment finance and for schemes covering upgradation of food processing units. An operating history and existing revenue usually strengthen an application rather than weaken it.
Need a quote for your loan application?
Tell us your production requirement and we’ll send a written quote with model, capacity and specification — in the format your lender asks for.
